3 years agoon
It’s no secret that being a celebrity and getting married can be challenging, as anyone who follows tabloids can attest. That’s why it’s worth contemplating why so many famous cultural figures and celebrities have chosen not to marry. This diverse list includes contemporary film and television stars, celebrated political and literary figures of the past, and even the late queen of England.
Some have remained single, while others have been in long-term relationships. It’s worth noting that this list is not gender-biased, as it includes almost as many unmarried male celebrities. Don’t forget to share this list and let us know if any of these unmarried celebrities surprise you.
Lauren Graham appears to be content in her enduring romantic partnership. The actress, known for her roles in Gilmore Girls and Parenthood, has been in a relationship with Peter Krause for seven years. The couple first met in 1995 when they starred together in the sitcom, Caroline in the City, but they didn’t reconnect until they were cast as siblings on the NBC drama, Parenthood. Graham has been open with the public about her relationship with Krause and has stated that although they have no immediate plans for marriage, she is willing to consider it in the future.
Despite his noteworthy dating history, Al Pacino has never been married. The Academy Award-winning actor is a father to three children, however. He shares one daughter, Julie Marie, with acting coach Jan Tarrant, and he has a pair of twins named Anton James and Olivia Rose with actress Beverly D’Angelo. Pacino was in a seven-year relationship with D’Angelo, but they eventually went their separate ways. He is also recognized for his romantic involvement with his Godfather co-star, Diane Keaton. In recent times, Pacino was dating Argentine actress Lucila Polak, but their relationship ended in 2018.
Naomi Watts, known for her roles in Mulholland Drive and 21 Grams, cannot be faulted for her reluctance to commit to a long-term relationship. She and fellow actor Liev Schreiber were a couple for 11 years and have two children together. Despite their lengthy time together, they never tied the knot and eventually separated in 2016.
Mindy Kaling’s contributions to The Office, The Mindy Project, and various successful movies have made her one of the most prominent names in comedy in the last ten years. Despite her fame, Kaling has chosen to keep her romantic life private. She has avoided being in high-profile relationships and has not revealed the identity of the father of her child, who was born in 2017. Kaling has explained that she wants to have a conversation with her daughter about the matter before discussing it with others.
It may come as a surprise that Jon Hamm has never tied the knot. The actor was in a relationship with screenwriter Jennifer Westfeldt for 18 years, which he regarded as an informal marriage. In 2009, they collaborated to create their production company, Point West Pictures. In 2017, they parted ways, leaving Hamm unattached. Despite the breakup, Hamm’s career has continued to soar. In addition to appearing as a guest on numerous comedies, including Parks and Recreation and The Last Man on Earth, he has landed significant roles in Mad Men, Baby Driver, and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.
Marisa Tomei has had an extensive career since starting in the 1980s. Despite being an Academy Award-winning actress, she is not married. From 2008 to 2012, she dated actor Logan Marshall-Green, and there were rumors that they were engaged. However, Tomei’s representatives denied the rumors. Tomei has been vocal about her views on marriage, expressing that it may not be for her. In a 2009 interview, she stated, “I’m not a big fan of marriage as an institution, and I don’t think women need to have children to be considered complete human beings.”
Tyra Banks, the supermodel and host of America’s Next Top Model, has been a public figure for decades and has been in many well-known relationships. However, she has never been married. Her reluctance to marry may be attributed to her previous relationships. Banks has spoken out about a past abusive relationship, saying, “I won’t be naming names on the show, but one specific relationship involved not only infidelity but also emotional abuse. It was really difficult, but it made me stronger.”
Anna Kournikova, once a top tennis player, had to retire at the young age of 21 due to a back and spinal injury, but that did not make her any less of a celebrity. She has been romantically linked to several high-profile figures, including NHL players Pavel Bure and Sergei Fedorov. However, she is best known for her long-term relationship with singer Enrique Iglesias. Despite rumors of marriage, Kournikova has denied being married to Iglesias. The couple has two children together.
Goldie Hawn (known for her role in Foul Play) has had two marriages, unlike many others on this list. She was married to Gus Trikonis from 1969 to 1976 and then to Bill Hudson from 1976 to 1982. However, she is still on this list thanks to her 35-year-long relationship with Kurt Russell. The couple has one son together and numerous stepchildren. Interestingly, they have never tied the knot and have lived in five different homes throughout their relationship.
Chelsea Handler has never been shy about discussing her dating life. Despite her openness, it seems unlikely that she will be getting married anytime soon, regardless of the state of her relationship. In fact, Handler once created an anti-marriage poster for her Netflix series, Chelsea, as a humorous public service announcement. The poster read, “Marriage. You can say no.” However, in recent years, Handler’s stance on marriage seems to have shifted slightly. She now seems to acknowledge that it is possible to be devoted and committed to someone without the need for a formal ceremony.
Owen Wilson, a long-time Hollywood actor, has yet to find a lifelong partner. Despite not settling down, he has had a dating history with many Hollywood celebrities. His former girlfriend, Sheryl Crow, even dedicated a song titled “Safe and Sound” to him in 2002, which is believed to detail their relationship. Wilson may not be married, but he does have three children. He has a son with Jade Duell, a former girlfriend, a second son with Caroline Lindqvist, and a daughter with Varunie Vongsvirates.
Maya Rudolph has been with her partner, Paul Thomas Anderson, since 2001 and they have four children together, three daughters named Pearl, Lucille, and Minnie, and one son named Jack. Despite being together for so long, they have not officially tied the knot. However, they often refer to each other as husband and wife in interviews. According to Rudolph, the term “husband” means that Anderson is the father of her child, they live together as a couple, and they are committed to each other.
Matthew Perry, famous for his role on Friends, has never been married. Throughout his career, Perry has been romantically linked to Yasmine Bleeth and Julia Roberts. In 1997, Perry completed rehab for a Vicodin addiction after his relationship with Roberts ended. Unfortunately, he suffered a relapse in 2001 but has since managed to turn his life around. Perry was in a relationship with Lizzy Caplan from 2006 to 2016, but reportedly ended it because he did not want to get married. Perry is currently single and actively involved in working with the National Association of Drug Court Professionals.
Winona Ryder, recognized for her iconic roles in films like Beetlejuice, Edward Scissorhands, and Heathers, and later as Joyce on Stranger Things, has been in the public eye for her relationships. Ryder was previously engaged to Johnny Depp for three years in the early 1990s and later had a long-term relationship with Matt Damon in the late 90s. Since 2011, she has been with Scott Mackinlay Hahn, but they have not indicated any intentions to get married.
Edie Falco, who starred in hit TV shows like The Sopranos and Nurse Jackie, has never been married. According to her past comments, it seems unlikely that she will ever walk down the aisle. Falco has expressed her aversion to the idea of marriage and has attributed it to her parents’ divorce and her general observation of unappealing marriages. In a 2010 interview with PopSugar, she said, “Because I’m not married I tend to get a lot of eye-rolling conversations with people about their marriages. Why would I want to head there? I want love in my life, no question about that. But I have a ton of it.” Falco, who has children of her own, believes that friendships are like marriages in many ways and that she has developed close relationships with her friends that have been worked on diligently.
Charlize Theron has never prioritized a traditional marriage ceremony. Instead, the Academy Award-winning actress has focused on finding a partner that makes her happy. Though she has not found the perfect match, she has dated several people in Hollywood. Theron has had relationships with Third Eye Blind band member Stephan Jenkins and actor Stuart Townsend. Her most recent high-profile relationship was with Sean Penn, with whom she got engaged, but ultimately split and ended their relationship in June 2015.
Queen Latifah, who has achieved stardom in music, television, and film for over twenty years, has always been private about her romantic relationships. She has made a conscious effort to keep the details of her love life out of the public eye. When asked in 2017 if she would discuss her romantic relationships on her new talk show, she declined, stating, “I don’t feel the need to discuss my private life on this show or any show. There’s the part of my life that the public and I share together. And there’s the part that’s mine to keep for myself. And that’s mine.”
Despite her fame as a top athlete, Danica Patrick has yet to settle down. Patrick has been married twice before, first to physical therapist Paul Edwards Hospenthal whom she met while recovering from a hip injury. The couple divorced in 2013. Afterward, Patrick began dating fellow race car driver Ricky Stenhouse Jr. before their relationship ended in 2017. More recently, she has been romantically linked to NFL player Aaron Rodgers and the couple seems to be enjoying their time together. While it remains unclear whether they will tie the knot, they appear to be happy with their current arrangement.
Kristen Davis, known for her role in Sex and the City, has had a challenging journey with addiction. Davis became sober at 22 years old, after struggling with alcohol addiction in her youth. She credits her upbringing in the southern United States for her early introduction to alcohol. Although Davis has not found a long-term romantic partner, she has become a mother through adoption. She has two children, a daughter named Gemma Rose and a son named Wilson, and they currently reside in Los Angeles.
Kylie Minogue, known for her work in singing, modeling, and acting, has yet to add marriage to her list of accomplishments. While she had a brief engagement to Joshua Sasse, the engagement was called off shortly after. During this time, Minogue was also diagnosed with breast cancer and had to take a break from her career. However, she recovered from cancer and has remained cancer-free since then. Minogue has stated that being single doesn’t bother her as she does not feel the need for a relationship to feel secure and enjoys having the freedom to make her own choices.
Sarah Silverman, a popular comedian, has been in the public eye for more than two decades. She has acted in numerous television series, films, and stand-up specials. Despite being involved romantically with Hollywood heavyweights such as Jimmy Kimmel and Michael Sheen, Silverman has not tied the knot. In fact, she once tweeted in 2014 about her disdain for marriage, saying that she would never get married and didn’t want the government involved in her love life.
Rebel Wilson is a multi-talented actress, writer, and producer in Hollywood. While she has kept her romantic life under wraps in the past, Wilson previously dated and lived with her Bridesmaids co-star Matt Lucas from 2012 to 2015. However, the couple eventually parted ways. Recently, Wilson has been dating Jacob Busch, the heir to Anheuser-Busch, after meeting through mutual friends. It remains to be seen whether they will eventually tie the knot.
Throughout her lengthy career in show business spanning over 50 years, Diane Keaton has had highly publicized relationships with several Hollywood heavyweights such as Woody Allen, Al Pacino, and Warren Beatty. However, Keaton’s stance on marriage has prevented any of these relationships from culminating in marriage. Keaton has been quoted as saying that not being married has not made her life any less fulfilling and that the “old maid myth is garbage.” Despite not being married, Keaton has not let that prevent her from starting a family and has adopted two children on her own.
Lucy Liu, known for her roles in Elementary and Charlie’s Angels, has been romantically linked to various celebrities, including George Clooney and Will McCormack, but has never settled down for a long-term commitment. She was in a serious relationship with Noam Gottesman, but they never got married. In 2015, Liu decided to become a single parent and had a son via a gestational surrogate. She is vocal about her decision to become a single parent and believes that it was the best choice for her at the time due to her busy schedule.
Over the years, singer Sheryl Crow has been linked to numerous high-profile romantic relationships, including guitarist Eric Clapton and actor Owen Wilson. Although she got engaged to disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong in 2005, the closest she came to marriage, the couple split the following year before they could walk down the aisle.
Oprah Winfrey, the talk show host turned “queen of all media,” has been in a relationship with her partner Steadman Graham since 1986. Although the couple briefly got engaged in 1992, they never went through with the ceremony. In later years, Winfrey revealed that Graham’s traditional views on marriage didn’t align with her own beliefs, stating, “His interpretation of what it means to be a husband and what it would mean for me to be a wife would have been pretty traditional, and I would not have been able to fit into that.” In a separate interview, Winfrey expressed that she didn’t want to be married, as it would compromise the life she had created for herself.
Cote de Pablo, the actress known for her role in NCIS, has never been married. She was in a 15-year relationship with fellow actor Diego Serrano, but the couple never made the decision to tie the knot. Since their breakup in 2015, de Pablo has remained single and has not publicly shared her stance on marriage. Although some fans have expressed hope that she would date her NCIS co-star Michael Weatherly, he is happily married to Bojana Janković. Nonetheless, de Pablo and Weatherly maintain a close friendship.
Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy and one of the most influential women in television, has chosen not to marry. In an interview with Oprah, Rhimes explained that she didn’t want to risk losing the freedom to live her life exactly how she wanted. While Rhimes remains unmarried, she has a large family. She has adopted two children and had a third child through gestational surrogacy.
Allison Janney, a highly acclaimed actress, has amassed an impressive collection of awards throughout her career. She has won seven Primetime Emmy Awards, three Critics’ Choice Television Awards, four Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Drama Desk Awards, two Outer Critics Circle Awards, an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, a Golden Globe Award, three Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, and three more Screen Actors Guild Awards. Perhaps the takeaway is that not getting married has served her well.
Coco Chanel, a trailblazing fashion designer, made an immense impact on the fashion industry. Despite having relationships throughout her life, marriage was never a priority for her as she remained dedicated to her work. Chanel briefly dated composer Igor Stravinsky and even attended the premiere of his Rite of Spring. Later, she entered into a long-term relationship with Hugh Grosvenor, Duke of Westminster, whom she met on his yacht. The couple dated for several years, and there were even reports of a marriage proposal, but Chanel ultimately declined.
For almost the entirety of their nine-year relationship, Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s enduring romance was documented on reality television. During this period, they welcomed three children into the world but never made it official with a wedding ceremony. Despite considering a proposal in 2011, Disick ultimately decided against it after Kardashian expressed her hesitation, asking, “If things are going so well between us, why would we want to alter that?”
Since 1982, Ricky Gervais has maintained a committed and enduring relationship with Jane Fallon. Despite their 37-year partnership, they have chosen not to marry. Gervais, who is an atheist, does not find value in a religious ceremony that involves a deity he does not believe in. Moreover, the couple has never had children. Gervais is known for deviating from the norm, so their decision to forgo marriage does not come as a surprise.
Lauryn Hill’s career trajectory has been notoriously unconventional since her commercial breakthrough two decades ago. Her romantic life has followed a similar path. For a span of 15 years, Hill was in a relationship with Rohan, son of Bob Marley, and together they had five children. However, the couple never formalized their union through marriage, and their relationship ended when Hill had a child with a different partner.
Dana Delany, a prominent actress recognized for her roles in various films, her portrayal of Lois Lane in several animated Superman productions, and her prominent part in the TV series Desperate Housewives, has been considered one of Hollywood’s most sought-after bachelorettes for quite some time. However, according to remarks she made in 2007, Delany did not choose to remain single. She stated, “Marriage has never been a significant concern for me… but I believe I’m ready now… I had the chance to explore and experience various individuals, having all the fun in the world and figuring out what I genuinely enjoy.”
During her reign from 1533 to 1603, Queen Elizabeth I was famously referred to as the “Virgin Queen” due to her consistent refusal to marry. Elizabeth declined numerous proposals throughout her lifetime and even declared herself married to her people. To this day, historians continue to speculate about her reasons for remaining unmarried.
Kimberly Stewart, an actress and fashion designer who is the daughter of Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart and actress/model Alana Stewart, almost didn’t make it onto this list. At the age of 19, Stewart became engaged to Talan Torriero, star of the TV show Laguna Beach. However, the engagement was short-lived, and Stewart has remained unmarried since then. She did have a child with film star Benicio del Toro, however.
We must clarify that Vanessa Paradis eventually got married in 2018 to French writer Samuel Benchetrit. However, she deserves an honorable mention for her almost two-decade-long relationship with Johnny Depp. Despite having two children together, the couple never formally married during their time together from 1998 to 2012. Considering what occurred during Depp’s subsequent marriage to Amber Heard, it appears that it was likely for the best that Paradis did not marry him.
Actress Jorja Fox has made a name for herself with her work on popular television shows like The West Wing and CSI. She is also known for keeping her personal life out of the public eye. Despite rumors of several relationships over the years, Fox has managed to keep her romantic affairs private. Although there was a circulating rumor about her being previously married, it was eventually deemed false. Fox appears to prioritize keeping her successful career in the spotlight rather than her dating life.
Andrea Tantaros, a former Fox News personality, doesn’t appear to be in a hurry to get married. Despite dating Jane’s Addiction band member Dave Navarro since 2015, the former Outnumbered and The Five host is taking things slow. Navarro, who has been married three times before, may not be in a rush to settle down again either. Tantaros has also been embroiled in a legal battle with Fox News, alleging sexual harassment by former host Bill O’Reilly and demeaning comments regarding her body by Roger Ailes. These comments ultimately impacted her career when she dismissed them.
Miranda Richardson, the celebrated English actress, has devoted much of her time and energy to her illustrious career, which has encompassed an impressive range of film roles and garnered her numerous awards. It’s possible that her busy schedule has left little time for marriage or children, and considering her professional success, it’s understandable if that is indeed the case (and we might even be inclined to follow in her footsteps).
Greta Garbo, an actress from the early days of Hollywood, almost got married but ultimately couldn’t go through with it. On her wedding day, she left her fiancé Jack Gilbert at the altar. Garbo said she was interested in getting married, but Gilbert wasn’t the right person for her. Throughout her career, Garbo continued to date and had a public relationship with Leopold Stokowski. After her death, biographers revealed that they believed Garbo was either bisexual or lesbian and had dated women. This information was discovered in a series of letters that Garbo had written to other women.
Actress Dina Meyer rose to fame in the early 1990s with her role in Beverly Hills, 90210 and has since appeared in numerous films and TV shows, playing a wide range of characters. Although she was previously linked to actors Shane West and Billy Joel, in recent years, she has kept her romantic life private and out of the public eye.
Susan B. Anthony, a prominent figure in the women’s suffrage movement, was too committed to advocating for women’s rights to consider marriage. Despite receiving multiple marriage proposals during her youth, Anthony was not interested in the traditional roles and restrictions placed upon women in marriage during her era. She believed in gender equality and was fiercely against laws that granted husbands absolute power in marriage. Anthony focused on her life’s work and never let her age stop her from fighting for what she believed in. Anthony passed away at the age of 86, never having married.
Actress Mary-Louise Parker has had a tumultuous love life with ups and downs. She dated actor Billy Crudup from 1996 to 2003, and he ended their relationship while Parker was seven months pregnant with their son. Crudup quickly moved on with Claire Danes. After the breakup, Parker remained single until she began dating her Weeds co-star, Jeffrey Dean Morgan. The two got engaged in February 2008, but their engagement was short-lived and they broke up in April of the same year. Since then, Parker has kept her love life out of the public eye, focusing on her family and career.
Actress Jacqueline Bisset has had several significant and long-lasting romantic relationships throughout her career. She has been involved with notable figures such as Canadian actor Michael Sarrazin, real estate magnate Victor Drai, dancer and actor Alexander Godunov, actor Vincent Pérez, and martial artist Emin Boztepe. Despite these serious relationships, Bisset has never tied the knot and opted to remain unmarried.
Monica Lewinsky’s past experiences have made it challenging for her to have a typical relationship. Although Lewinsky is not married, she prefers to keep her dating life out of the public eye. “You can ask about it, but I keep my personal life private,” Lewinsky told People. “I think people have known enough about my romantic life for a lifetime.” Whether or not Lewinsky will find love and get married in the future, it appears that she intends to keep those details confidential. While marriage is not her top priority at the moment, the activist remains active in combating cyberbullying and participating in the #MeToo movement.
Janet Napolitano, a highly respected American politician, has made remarkable contributions to the country. She served as the United States Secretary of Homeland Security from 2009 to 2013, and later became the President of the University of California. Despite being a successful woman, Napolitano has never married or had children. Over the years, there have been speculations about her sexuality, but Napolitano has consistently stated that she is simply a straight and single workaholic.
Harper Lee, the famously private author of To Kill a Mockingbird, avoided public attention for many years following the publication of her novel. She was once quoted as saying that she never wrote another book for two reasons: first, she couldn’t bear the pressure and publicity that came with the success of To Kill a Mockingbird, and second, she had said what she wanted to say and had no desire to repeat herself. This attitude extended to her personal life as well, as Lee never married or pursued serious romantic relationships.
Jane Austen, the renowned novelist, was known for defying the social conventions of her time, including in matters of the heart. Austen had several romantic relationships that didn’t lead to marriage, one of the most notable being with politician Thomas Langlois Lefroy.
Eva Mendes, who gained fame for her roles in films like Training Day and Hitch, has never tied the knot. Despite being in a long-term relationship with Ryan Gosling since 2011, the couple has managed to keep their personal lives extremely private. They have two daughters together, Esmeralda and Amada, but have never publicly discussed their relationship or any plans for marriage. While it remains uncertain if they will ever marry, it’s clear that the couple is content with their current situation and remain committed to each other.
